The dirt you can see is not the problem
A soft toy is three things stacked together: an outer pile fabric, a stuffing core, and often some hardware buried in the middle. Nearly all the trouble lives in that middle layer. Surface dust brushes off a teddy in seconds. What actually makes a toy smell is dried saliva, spilt milk, sweat and fine Gurugram road dust that has worked its way down into the fibrefill. That is why wiping a toy down or spraying it fresh lasts about two days: the source is untouched, sitting an inch deep. Ground-floor flats around Sushant Lok and Sector 49 see it faster than most, because toys on open shelves are very good dust traps and one damp monsoon is enough to give a well-loved bear that closed-cupboard smell.
How we choose the method
Before anything gets wet, we work out what is inside. We feel along the seams for a squeaker, a music box, a battery pouch or wire in the limbs, and we identify the filling. Polyester fibrefill takes a full wet clean comfortably. Foam chips and plastic pellets hold water, gain a lot of weight and can pull the outer fabric permanently out of shape, so those are surface-cleaned, or wet-cleaned with a much longer and gentler dry. Electronics come out through an opened seam and go back in with the seam restitched. If a unit is sealed in and cannot be reached, we clean without immersion and tell you that upfront. We then test colourfastness on a hidden seam, since red felt tongues, printed cheeks and dyed ribbon are the usual bleeders onto cream plush.
Drying is most of the job
Cleaning a soft toy is straightforward. Drying one properly is not. A toy can feel dry on the outside while the core is still wet, and a damp core turns sour within a week and can grow mould at the centre that never comes out. We dry long, at low heat, with movement, so the fill redistributes instead of setting into hard lumps. Lumpy stuffing is the classic result of a hot home machine wash, and once it sets it does not come back. Because these toys get chewed, rinsing matters as much as washing: we run extra rinses so nothing is left sitting in the pile, and we do not use harsh chlorine bleach on anything meant for a child.
What we cannot save
Sun-faded plush cannot be re-dyed. Pile that has matted from years of hugging comes back clean but not fluffy, and brushing helps only so far. Ballpoint ink and permanent marker on plush do not come out. Milk, blood or vomit that has already been hot-washed at home is usually set for good. Glued-on eyes and noses sometimes let go during cleaning, and a glued feature is always more of a risk than a stitched or locked one. Perished foam in older toys, the orange crumbly kind, disintegrates the moment it gets wet. If an item falls into any of these, we say so before we start, not after.
Before you hand it over
Photograph the toy from both sides. Take off clothing and accessories and keep them at home. Point out loose seams and old repairs, because a weak seam opens under proper cleaning and we would rather stitch it first. Mention batteries. Above all, tell us if this is the toy that has to be there at bedtime, jiske bina neend nahi aati, so we can flag it as irreplaceable. Many parents send it while the child is away for a few days, or send the second-favourite first to see how it comes back. Every order is counted with you at the door, packed separately from every other customer's order, and acknowledged with a written receipt at pickup.
What we take
Items we handle
- Teddy bears and plush animalsThe everyday case. Cleaned through to the stuffing, then the pile is brushed back up so it does not come home flat and matted.
- Giant and oversized soft toysThe metre-tall bears that no home machine will take. These need the longest drying of anything we handle, because the core sits so far from the surface.
- Bean and pellet-filled toysPellets and foam chips hold water and can stretch the outer fabric out of shape. We either surface-clean these or wet-clean with a much slower dry, and we tell you which before starting.
- Musical and battery-operated toysWhere the unit can be reached, we open a seam, take it out, clean the toy and restitch. Where it is sealed in, the toy is cleaned without immersion.
- Fabric dolls and rag dollsPrinted faces, hair and glued features all need testing first. Doll hair is treated separately from the body fabric.
- Baby comforters, soothers and security blanketsSmall, constantly chewed, and usually the item a baby will not settle without. Extra rinses, no bleach, and handled as irreplaceable.
- Pram, cot and playpen toysHanging rattles, cot mobiles and pram arches, including the plastic-and-fabric mixed ones that cannot go through a normal wash.
- Cloth playmats and fabric play tentsLarge flat items that collect floor dust and food. Cleaned and dried flat so the padding does not bunch up inside.
How it works
From your door and back again
Inspection and honest verdict
We look at fading, matting, ink, old stains and existing damage, and tell you what will improve and what will not. If we think a toy will not survive cleaning, we say so and hand it back.
Internal check
Seams are felt through to identify the filling and to find squeakers, music boxes, battery pouches or wire armature. This decides everything that follows.
Colourfastness test
A hidden seam is tested before the toy goes anywhere near water. Felt tongues, printed cheeks and dyed ribbon are the usual culprits for bleeding onto light plush.
Pre-treatment
Stains are worked individually. Food, milk and saliva marks are treated separately from general soiling, and we avoid anything aggressive on a toy a child puts in their mouth.
Cleaning
Full immersion for fibrefill toys; controlled surface cleaning where the filling or the hardware rules out a wet clean. Extra rinses either way, so no residue is left in the pile.
Controlled drying
Long and low, with movement, so the stuffing redistributes rather than setting into lumps. We dry to the core, not to the surface, because a damp centre is what causes the sour smell later.
Finishing and separate packing
Pile brushed back up, shape restored, seams checked and any that opened restitched. The toy is packed on its own and returned to your door.
