The rainy season brings welcome relief from the heat, but it also makes laundry day a struggle. Humid air slows drying, and clothes left damp for even a few hours can pick up a musty smell that is hard to remove. These tips help you dry clothes properly through the monsoon.
Why clothes smell during the monsoon
That sour, damp smell comes from bacteria and mildew growing in fabric that stays wet too long. The longer a garment takes to dry, the more likely it is to smell, even after a good wash. The goal is simple: get water out fast and get air moving.
Start with a better wash
- Spin properly. A full spin cycle removes far more water than wringing by hand, so clothes start drying much sooner.
- Do not overload the machine. Crowded clothes rinse poorly and hold more moisture.
- Skip heavy softeners on towels and sportswear; they can trap damp.
- Wash heavy items on their own. Jeans, towels and hoodies slow everything else down.
Drying clothes indoors
- Use a drying rack. Spread clothes out so air reaches every surface.
- Space items apart. Overlapping fabric stays wet in the folds.
- Run a fan pointing at the clothes, or place the rack near a window that stays slightly open.
- Hang shirts and trousers on hangers so air moves through them.
- Turn jeans and thick fabrics inside out and flip them halfway through the day.
- Use a dehumidifier or run the AC in dry mode if you have one, for a closed room.
What to avoid
- Folding clothes that feel even slightly damp. Put them away only when completely dry.
- Piling wet clothes in a basket while you wait for a sunny day.
- Drying in a closed bathroom without ventilation.
- Ironing clothes to finish drying them if the fabric is delicate; it can scorch or leave marks.
Finishing touches
If a garment still feels slightly damp, a quick pass with a steam iron on a suitable setting dries it fully and refreshes the fabric. Store clothes only when they are completely dry, and keep the wardrobe ventilated with a few sachets or a dry cloth bag to absorb moisture.
