Leather shoes never go out of style. Whether you wear them to the office, to weddings or on weekends, they take a lot of wear from dust, rain and daily use. With a simple routine you can keep them looking good for years. Here is how to clean leather shoes at home, step by step.
What you will need
- A soft brush, such as a horsehair brush
- Two soft cloths
- A mild leather cleaner or a little gentle soap in water
- Leather conditioner
- Shoe trees or paper to hold the shape
- Waterproofing spray, if suitable for your leather
Step 1: Remove laces and brush off the dust
Take out the laces and brush the whole shoe, including the welt and the seams, to remove loose dirt. Dirt left on the surface scratches the leather when you start cleaning.
Step 2: Wipe with a damp cloth
Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe the upper. Never soak leather; too much water causes stains, stiffness and cracking.
Step 3: Clean with a leather cleaner
Apply a small amount of cleaner to a cloth and work it into the leather in gentle circles. Test on a hidden spot first. Wipe away the residue with a clean, slightly damp cloth.
Step 4: Dry naturally
Stuff the shoes with paper or fit shoe trees, and leave them to dry in a shaded, airy spot. Never use a hairdryer, heater or direct sun, as heat dries out leather and makes it crack.
Step 5: Condition
Once dry, apply a thin layer of leather conditioner. It restores moisture and flexibility. Leave it to absorb, then buff gently with a clean cloth.
Step 6: Protect
If your leather allows it, finish with a protective spray to repel water and stains. Use it lightly and let it dry fully.
Common mistakes
- Using household cleaners, bleach or wipes with alcohol
- Putting leather shoes in the washing machine
- Drying them near a heater or in direct sun
- Skipping conditioner, which leads to cracks over time
- Storing damp shoes in a closed shoe box
When to call a professional
Home cleaning is fine for light dust and marks. But suede, nubuck, patent leather, deep stains, mould, water damage and colour loss are best handled by specialists, since the wrong product can ruin the finish.
Quick checklist
- Brush, wipe, clean, dry, condition, protect
- Never use heat to dry
- Rotate your pairs so each can rest a day
- Keep shoe trees in when not wearing them
