Silk pillowcases feel wonderful against skin and hair, but they need more care than cotton. Washed the wrong way, they lose their softness and sheen. With a few simple habits, a good silk pillowcase can last for years.
How often to wash
Because it sits against your face and hair every night, a silk pillowcase picks up oils, skincare and sweat. Washing it every one to two weeks keeps it fresh. Having a spare means you can rotate them without a gap.
Hand washing, step by step
- Fill a clean basin with cool or lukewarm water.
- Add a few drops of mild, pH-neutral detergent suitable for silk.
- Gently swish the pillowcase for a minute or two. Do not rub or twist.
- Rinse in cool water until all the soap is gone.
- Press out the water between towels. Do not wring.
If you use a machine, put the pillowcase in a mesh bag, choose the gentlest cold cycle and a very low spin. Check the label first, as some silk finishes are dry clean only.
Drying
Lay it flat on a towel or hang it in the shade. Keep it out of direct sun and away from the dryer. Heat and sunlight both weaken silk and fade colour.
Ironing
If it needs smoothing, iron on the lowest silk setting on the inside while slightly damp, or use a handheld steamer.
Handling common problems
- Oil and makeup marks: blot gently, do not rub, and wash promptly.
- Dull look: usually detergent residue. Rinse again in cool water.
- Snags: keep jewellery and sharp nails away from the fabric.
- Colour bleed: wash new silk alone the first few times.
Storage
Store clean, dry pillowcases folded in a breathable cotton bag or drawer. Avoid plastic bags that trap moisture.
Quick checklist
- Wash every one to two weeks
- Cool water, mild detergent, no wringing
- Dry in shade, iron on low
- Store clean and dry, in cotton
