Silk is one of the most loved natural fabrics: soft, light and lustrous. It is also delicate, and a single wrong wash can leave it dull or stained. The good news is that silk care is simple once you know the rules. Here is how to care for silk clothes the right way.
Check the label first
Many silk garments say "dry clean only", especially structured pieces, sarees and anything with lining, embroidery or bright dyes. Where the label allows hand washing, the steps below keep the fabric safe.
How to hand wash silk
- Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water.
- Add a small amount of mild, pH-neutral detergent made for delicates.
- Submerge the garment and swish gently for a minute or two. Do not scrub or twist.
- Rinse in cool water until the water runs clear.
- Press the water out between clean towels. Never wring.
How to dry silk
Lay the garment flat on a clean towel, or hang it on a padded hanger, in the shade with good air flow. Direct sun fades silk and weakens the fibre. Avoid tumble dryers.
How to iron silk
Iron on the lowest silk setting while the fabric is slightly damp, or use a steamer. Work on the inside of the garment or place a thin cotton cloth in between. Never spray water directly on silk, as it can leave marks.
Dealing with stains
Act fast, but gently. Blot, do not rub, and avoid hot water or household cleaners, which can set stains and strip dye. For oil, perfume and food marks on silk, professional cleaning is the safest route.

- Using regular detergents with enzymes or bleach
- Hot water, which shrinks and dulls silk
- Wringing or twisting
- Drying in direct sunlight
- Spraying perfume directly on the fabric
