Silk clothes are special pieces in many wardrobes. Whether it is a silk saree for a wedding or a favourite scarf, how you store silk matters as much as how you wash it. Poor storage leads to creases, yellowing, musty smells and moth damage. These five habits keep silk in good condition.
1. Always store silk clean and completely dry
Body oil, sweat and invisible stains turn yellow and attract insects over time. Clean silk before storing it for a season, and make sure it is fully dry. Even slight dampness can lead to mildew.
2. Use breathable covers, never plastic
Plastic traps moisture. Wrap silk in clean cotton or muslin cloth, or use breathable garment bags. For sarees, an old clean cotton sheet or a muslin saree cover works well.
3. Fold or hang the right way
- Sarees and scarves: fold loosely and refold every few months along different lines, so the fabric does not weaken along a single crease. Place acid-free tissue between folds.
- Shirts, blouses and dresses: hang on padded or wide hangers, with a breathable cover.
- Heavy or embroidered pieces: fold flat with tissue, because hanging can stretch them under their own weight.
4. Keep moisture and pests away
Store silk in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Dry sachets or cloth bags of natural moisture absorbers help in humid months. If you use anti-moth products, wrap them in cloth and keep them from touching the fabric, as some leave stains or smells.
5. Protect it from light and heat
Sunlight fades silk and weakens fibre. Keep the wardrobe away from direct sun and heat sources, and do not leave silk hanging near a bright window.
Seasonal care
- Air silk in the shade before storing and after taking it out.
- Check stored pieces every two or three months for creases, spots or insects.
- In the rainy season, keep an eye on humidity and refresh wardrobe sachets.
